Low Testosterone Treatment

Low testosterone treatment is aimed at increasing the levels of testosterone, which tend to deplete over time as we age. Testosterone is found in both men and women (very little amount, the main hormone for females is estrogen) and can become unbalanced at any age.

Testosterone is a steroid hormone inside the body, produced by the testes, and is responsible for the production of strong muscles and strong bones. It is also responsible for the deep voice that is usually experienced as puberty evolves, as well as the production of sperm and the overall sexual health, libido and sexual functioning of the human body.

Low testosterone is an Indication

Low testosterone is an indication that the body’s testosterone levels have declined at a greater length and severity than what is considered to be normal and natural. Approximately 5 million American males have low testosterone. Low testosterone can be a sign that the hypothalamus or pituitary glands are having problems or that there is a miscommunication occurring between the brain and the organs responsible for the body’s balance of testosterone.

Other, but not all, possible factors can be from some sort of accident that resulted in testicular injury, inflammation of the testes and the exposure to radiation therapy or chemotherapy used to treat testicular cancer. Thankfully, low testosterone treatment does typically work fairly well in treating, not to be confused with ‘curing’, many causes of low testosterone, slight or severe.

Before Looking For a Low T Treatment

Before looking for a low testosterone treatment make sure to first seek a medical diagnosis. In order for the body to stay balanced it sets strict guidelines in terms of the ranges a hormone, chemical, etc. can function between. Low testosterone can be detected easily through the use of blood tests that determine whether or not your testosterone levels fall below these implanted guidelines. If low testosterone is identified, these are some types of treatments you may want to look into:

  • Testosterone injections – Injections work the best and are the strongest but are not used as much as you would think. They work best because rather than being absorbed slowly over time, the injection is put intramuscularly which greatly increases the benefits
    • Pills – physicians generally do not recommend these pills. In pill form, testosterone is metabolized too fast to raise sufficient blood levels to be useful. Taking testosterone pills also come with the potential for dangerous side effects in the liver, including benign and malignant tumors.
      • Transdermal methods – testosterone is absorbed through the skin, most efficient when put directly on scrotum.
      • Patches – (such as Androderm) worn on the skin or the scrotum. Provides constant testosterone to the blood stream, after absorption.
        • Gels – (AndroGel and Testim) are applied once a day to the shoulders, upper arms, or stomach.
          • Wash hands after touching gels that contain testosterone to prevent transfer and/or shower before any sexual activity with another person.

Low testosterone has many causes as well as many treatment options. Before going through low testosterone treatment, be sure to get blood work first to determine the testosterone levels and to get a diagnosis on what is causing your low testosterone. It is important to treat low testosterone immediately because it can bring forth serious health effects. It can be shown that a low testosterone causes a higher prevalence of depression, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, fracture, frailty, mental confusions, and, of course, damage, sometimes serious or permanent, to your sexual organs.
